In the world of SaaS, there are companies that make a splash, and then there are those that create tidal waves. Regpack, a registration and payment processing software, is one such tidal wave.

  • Launched in 2012
  • hit their first million-dollar year in 2016
  • boast over $10 million in revenue across 1,400 summer camps, after-school programs, NFL camps, and more.

With an impressive revenue-per-employee ratio and a bootstrapped journey, Regpack is a testament to what a focused vision and efficient execution can achieve.

The Journey of Regpack

Founded by Asaf Darash, Regpack was born out of a need identified during his PhD at Berkeley. While working on a system where everything was variable, he realized the service industry, especially the education sector, required a unique onboarding process. This realization led to the creation of Regpack, a platform that could consolidate the fragmented onboarding processes across various service-based industries.

Understanding the Business Model

Regpack operates on a three-pronged revenue model:

  1. Percentage of GMV (Gross Merchandise Value): They earn a share from the payment processing, with special deals with payment processors. On average, for every $100 processed, Regpack keeps around 30 cents, with the rest going to card companies like Visa and Mastercard.

  1. Purchase Protection: This unique feature allows end-users to protect their investments in services. For instance, if a parent books a camp for their child and the child falls sick, they can get a refund. This protection accounts for about 20% of Regpacks’ revenue.

  1. Pure SaaS Fee: Organizations pay an annual fee based on the ‘per seat’ model, averaging around $3K per year.

Innovation at the Forefront

One of the standout features introduced by Regpack is the payment installment system for the service industry. It’s akin to the “buy now, pay later” model but without the financial risks and credit checks. This system allows users to pay in installments until the service’s actual delivery time, aligning with when the organization needs the funds. This feature alone has driven a 30% revenue growth for organizations that implemented it.

The Efficiency of Regpack

With a team of just 30, Regpack has managed to achieve a revenue per employee of $350K. This efficiency is attributed to a combination of factors:

Highly Skilled Team: Most of the team members are Berkeley grads, ensuring top-notch skills and a data-driven approach.

Automation: Reg Packs heavily relies on automation, minimizing manual intervention and maximizing efficiency.

Minimal Development Debt: The platform is built in a way that requires minimal updates, allowing the team to focus on marketing and sales.

Looking Ahead

With a current customer base of 1,500 organizations and a revenue north of $10.5 million, Regpack is on an upward trajectory. While they are not yet close to hitting the billion-dollar mark in GMV, the next two to three years look promising.

Conclusion

Regpacks’ journey from its inception in 2012 to its current success is a story of innovation, efficiency, and understanding market needs. With a strong foundation and a clear vision for the future, they are poised to make even bigger waves in the SaaS world.
