Global South in AI Affinity co-located at NeurIPS's main objective is to offer an annual multidisciplinary academic meetup to promote the exchange of research achievements in Language AI and Machine Learning with the highest ethical standards for a diverse and inclusive community. The global south, which has a long history of colonization, has taken charge of its language AI with renewed zeal in an effort to create a new world of language richness within AI. This cannot be satisfied by translation models built with transfer learning or the latest Zero-Shot Machine Translation 7 model which is adding more languages without the AI getting a single line of translated data. We need the global south to come together to build language models in a way that works efficiently and with the story of our history. This workshop is the beginning of that journey. The Global South in AI workshop this year is a design thinking workshop with a hybrid zoom session of global south innovators to arrive at actionable insights about commons problems, potential solutions and identifying shared resources for open datasets for translations, transliterations, language model generators, benchmarks and speech recognition for Global south languages.
