Gumroad grew its team to 25 people at its peak in 2014, including interns, before laying off approximately 75 percent of the workforce following the decision to stop raising venture capital. The company was reduced to four or five people after the restructuring.

By 2023 and 2024, third-party aggregators reported headcount estimates ranging from roughly 100 to more than 400, figures that Gumroad's own public disclosures suggest are likely inflated or miscounted. The company has publicly described operating with zero full-time employees under a part-time and contractor model facilitated through a platform called Flexile.
