Managed Hosting Providers
WP Engine is a managed WordPress hosting and digital experience platform founded in 2010 by Jason Cohen, who is also known online as "A Smart Bear." The company hosts millions of websites and processes tens of billions of events per day, serving a broad range of customers from small businesses to large enterprises. Cohen transitioned from founder to Chief Innovation Officer after hiring Heather Brunner as CEO, a role she has held for more than eleven years as of 2024. WP Engine reached $1 million in annual recurring revenue within its first eighteen months and grew to $5 million ARR by 2012. The company crossed $100 million ARR in less than seven years from founding. In January 2018, Silver Lake made a $250 million majority investment in the company, bringing cumulative funding to approximately $290 million. Cohen spoke at SaaS Open in March 2024, an event that drew roughly 1,000 software CEOs, where he outlined the operational and cultural shifts required to scale a SaaS company after achieving product-market fit, including a quarterly planning cadence built around 100-day cycles.
