Co-living is a term used to describe a home where two or more people who aren't family members live. In other words, people who aren't living alone or in a "traditional" family set-up.

The concept has been around since the 1980s when some of the first official co-living communities were created in Amsterdam. It was no longer expected that people would live with their parents, get married and then move out together to start their own family. The "nuclear family" was being redefined and expectations about how we should or wanted to live were changing.
