Calendly

Business Scheduling Software

Calendly is a scheduling automation platform founded in 2013 by Tope Awotona, who serves as CEO. The product eliminates the back-and-forth of meeting coordination by allowing users to schedule in a single interaction, and it also powers downstream meeting workflows including team routing, reminder delivery, and CRM updates. As of early 2021, approximately 4 million people used the app on a monthly basis, with customers ranging from individual professionals to large enterprises such as Zillow, Zendesk, and Marketo. The company generated approximately $70 million in revenue in the year prior to its January 2021 Series B, which valued Calendly at more than $3 billion. That round raised $350 million led by OpenView Venture Partners and Iconiq Capital, bringing total funding to roughly $350.6 million. Awotona bootstrapped the company with his personal savings before raising a seed round in 2014 from Atlanta Ventures and OpenView Ventures, and the Series B represented the first significant outside capital since that seed. At the time of the interview, Calendly employed approximately 80 people in total: 70 based in the United States and 10 from its technical partner Railsware, which has worked with the company since 2013. The company was six years into operations and described rapid growth in both its product and headcount as its primary operational challenge.
