Traditional CDNs suffer from quality of service degradations such as excessive rebuffering, reduced bit rates and delays at peak demand times. This is especially common for live sports events and popular shows where millions of concurrent users view the same stream. Many broadcasters have resorted to disabling HD resolutions and using low bit-rate encodings during peak demand, impairing the viewer quality of experience. With the advent of 4K resolution video and VR content, this problem can greatly escalate.

HiveCDN uses uses WebRTC technology to create a peer-to-peer overlay network, making each viewer also a content source. HiveCDN works together with a broadcaster's conventional CDN, while offloading as much bandwidth as possible to the P2P mesh. This allows the network throughput to seamlessly scale.
