Permit.io is a developer-focused authorization and permissions infrastructure company founded in 2020 by Or Weis. The company allows software teams to embed access control, role management, audit logs, and related permissions capabilities into their products without building those systems from scratch, positioning itself alongside authentication and billing as foundational infrastructure a developer should never have to write themselves. Permit.io emerged from stealth approximately one month before the March 2022 interview, having spent roughly a year in bootstrapped design-partner mode before launching its self-serve SaaS offering. The product is built on top of OPAL, an open-source authorization layer co-authored by Weis, which had already attracted production deployments at companies including Tesla, Zapier, and Accenture within its first year of existence. The company closed a $6 million seed round in July 2021 on a capped SAFE, selling less than 15 percent of the business and purchasing roughly two years of runway. At the time of the interview the team stood at 13 people, with Weis targeting 16 as a near-term cruising altitude while pursuing a product-led growth strategy anchored in the open-source community.
