YCharts is a Chicago-based web financial data platform founded in 2009 that provides investment research tools, including charting, screening, and analytics, for wealth advisors, institutional investors, and retail investors focused on publicly traded equities, mutual funds, and ETFs. The company positions itself as an affordable alternative to Bloomberg and FactSet, offering what its CEO describes as roughly 90 percent of the functionality of those platforms at approximately one fifth of the price. Sean Brown, who joined as CEO about two and a half years before the February 2019 interview, has overseen a period of accelerating growth. YCharts finished 2018 with approximately $8 million in annual recurring revenue and was tracking toward $8.4 million on an annualized basis as of early 2019, representing roughly 35 percent year-over-year growth. The company reached cash flow positive status without raising additional capital since its last round in 2015. With 4,000 customers, a gross annual MRR churn of 15 percent, an eight-month CAC payback period, and an average customer lifetime of 58 months, YCharts has built a recurring-revenue engine that Brown says is self-sustaining. The 46-person team, two thirds of which is based in Chicago, is targeting the $10 million ARR threshold as its next milestone.
