Security Compliance Software
RealDefense is a Pasadena-based consumer privacy and security platform that monetizes partner user bases through a suite of licensed technology products, including its SmartScan telemetry stack, VPN, identity protection, and optimization tools. The company was founded in 2003 by Gary Gusenev under the name Cyber Defender, grew to approximately $70 million in revenue by 2009 as a Nasdaq-listed public company, and was reacquired by Gusenev in 2017 for under $10 million, or less than 1x its then-annual recurring revenue of roughly $7 million.
Since the 2017 buyback, RealDefense has executed six acquisitions, funded primarily through venture debt rather than equity dilution. The company secured a $30 million credit facility from Sunflower Bank in 2022, at a time when its EBITDA exceeded $10 million. By year-end 2025, RealDefense was on track to generate between $60 million and $70 million in top-line revenue with EBITDA of $20 million to $25 million, supported by a team of approximately 300 people and a revenue-per-employee ratio of roughly $230,000.
Gusenev holds less than 20 percent equity in the current entity, a structure he describes as intentional and operator-driven. The company is targeting acquisitions of $100 million or more from a self-described multi-billion-dollar M&A pipeline, with a stated focus on consumer privacy and security businesses that can be integrated into RealDefense's shared billing, marketing, and AI infrastructure.
