G2 is a software marketplace and peer review platform founded in 2012 and headquartered in Chicago. The company operates as a Yelp-style destination for business software, allowing buyers to read and write verified user reviews across more than 100,000 listed applications. G2 generates revenue by selling premium marketing tools to software vendors who want to amplify their presence on the platform. As of early 2022, G2 reported annual recurring revenue of just over $80 million, up from $55 million in 2021, and reached unicorn status with a $1.1 billion valuation following a $157 million Series D round led by Permira in June 2021. The company serves approximately 3,000 software vendor customers and attracts roughly 7 million monthly active users. Salesforce is among its strategic investors. Godard Abel, who confirmed the title of CEO in the interview, co-founded G2 alongside Tim Handorf, who serves as Co-Founder and President. Abel is a serial SaaS entrepreneur who previously founded BigMachines, which was acquired by Oracle, and co-founded SteelBrick, which was acquired by Salesforce. G2 employs approximately 650 people globally as of early 2022.
