Kévin Moënne-Loccoz described the sales engagement market as "super saturated" with a large number of actors, though he did not name specific competitors by name in this presentation. He noted that many incumbents focused heavily on enterprise customers or used what he characterized as uninspiring marketing, which Lemlist sought to differentiate against through branding and product design.
For the Taplio and Tweet Hunter products, Moënne-Loccoz described Taplio as a product that had become a "Feature Factory," adding complexity with each new feature, and noted the team is working to simplify it. No specific rival products or their revenue figures were cited in a way that could be attributed as confirmed competitor data.
Lemlist ranks #8 of 875 Other Sales Software companies by annual revenue, putting it in the top 1% of the market.
Guillaume Moubeche set a company-wide goal of 5x revenue growth from December 2019 to December 2020, translating to a required monthly growth rate of roughly 16 percent. The entire team was incentivized around a single MRR goal rather than siloed metrics like MQLs or SQLs.
“Our goal essentially was to do like a 5x from december 2019 up to like uh december 2020. So the the monthly goal is i think it's around like uh 14 to 60 each month month-over-month growth rate so i think it's 16 to reach like 5x more or less.”
Rather than setting separate targets for marketing, sales, and support, Lemlist aligned every employee around one quarterly MRR growth goal. Hitting the goal each quarter could earn an employee a bonus of roughly 25 percent of their monthly salary per quarter, or just over 10 percent of annual salary.
“If everyone is focused on growing the mrr and then we set up like the mrr goal at the beginning of each quarter now everyone is focused on one thing which is revenue and revenue for us equals profit so it's like everyone goes to the same direction.”
Lemlist built a Facebook community called the Sales Automation Family that grew to 20,000 members and became a primary distribution channel for product updates, content, and new user acquisition. Guillaume Moubeche deliberately avoided measuring direct ROI from the community, treating it as a long-term brand asset.
“For me community has never been something where i wanted to measure like the roi i just know within like me that it's gonna bring something long-term and if i keep providing value to our users.”
Lemlist differentiated itself in a saturated sales engagement market by focusing on ultra personalization, including custom images and custom landing pages with lead variables, rather than automation volume. This philosophy shaped every product decision from launch.
“The key differentiator that we focused on very early on was Ultra personalization and the reason behind this is when you want to do sales it's really focusing on creating relationships with people rather than spamming people or just trying to convince people.”
Lemlist launched on AppSumo at $49 for a lifetime deal, generating roughly $400K in total sales across two rounds, of which Lemlist kept approximately $150K after AppSumo's 70 percent cut. This gave the company its initial user base and community foundation without any paid acquisition.
“Within two weeks we made something around like 170 000 which was like really good you know like to start a sas company it's uh it's quite nice.”
Lemlist turned down a $20M investment proposal and then a $30M investment proposal because the company was profitable from day one and maintained 35 to 45 percent EBITDA margins. The founders prioritized independence over outside capital and did not want a board directing strategy.
“We had a $20 million investment proposal that we turned down before turning down a $30 million investment simply because we don't need the funds we're profitable since day one we have between 35 and 45 % of a bid margins and we don't need a board or investors to force us into a specific direction.”
